A Sept. 14 preliminary hearing has been scheduled in Wise County General District Court for Glenda Gail Lawson, 32, charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Lonnie Dean Klepper.

Lawson was arraigned Thursday and remains held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail facility in Duffield. During the hearing, the court appointed Appalachia attorney Lonnie Kern to represent Lawson.

On Friday, Kern said before Sept. 14 he intends to file motions seeking bond for his client and cover discovery issues. Kern said Lawson asked to be able to attend Klepper's funeral, but Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney Chad Dotson "did not think that was appropriate," so his client must await the results of a bond hearing once that is arranged.

Klepper, 51, died of a single stab wound to the chest early Thursday. Lawson is accused of stabbing Klepper with a knife during an argument late Wednesday in the couple's apartment at 11-B E. Fifth St. South in Big Stone Gap.

Police say Lawson fled the scene but was located and arrested at someone else's apartment about two and a half blocks away from her apartment building.

Kern said "there will definitely have to be a bond hearing" for his client as soon as can be arranged "and otherwise, everything will proceed as normal" in capital cases.
